Gee.
Been quiet over this way for a while.
Since my last post I've gotten back to work.
Took up another contract, but this company does hire their contract workers (a.k.a. contingency workers), usually after about 3 months. Sometimes the economy or other situations delay things a bit, but, I'm giving it a year (about the length of my lease on this apartment).

Anyrate, good company, still going strong (even hiring), plenty of work, some involvement in things I'm interested in getting involved in, good team et al.

Been there about a month and a half, and has likelihood of becoming one of my top five favorite jobs, and possibly (if I get my way about having finally found a place to retire from) one of my top two favorite jobs.

Hope all are doing o.k.

Getting Bummed.
There's plenty of work out there...
If I wanted to do temporary work, that is.

ARRRRRRRGH!!! NNNNNOOOOOOOOO!!!

Temporary (or any other name for it like "Contractor" or "Consultant") work is not a good option for me.

"Consultant" and "Contractor" is still seen as "Temporary" by certain entities, like banks.
"Contract-to-hire" is a carrot on a stick. A lie. Come time for the contract to be up, you get a song and dance about the economy.
I've spent too much time in recent years hundreds of miles away from home on these contracts. (Home is a very depressed area, if there are drafting jobs I could make more money flippin' burgers. Seriously!)
I'm tired of that foolishness, I want luxuries like eating supper with my family on a regular basis.
Insurance is notoriously insane costing through agencies, not much better deal than buying independent. If I were to do that, I just as well stay home and flip burgers (and not double or triple my housing costs as well).
I am not going to move my family for some fool temporary job, no matter how long it lasts!!!

Just what's the deal with this trend?
Surely these agencies aren't brokering these victe - er - contractors for freebies!
What makes it so attractive to employers to keep a person on contract for eons and eons on end?

Nah... you just have a left handed torque... ;)

At least that's what I get told when I come up with something on that order.

Kate,
LOL... thanks. I have a terrible sense of humor, but, a great sense of 'personal branding'. ;)
