I just started using Fedora 10 and I'm having a difficult time installing plug ins..any thoughts or tips? I've looked at different ideas and theories on forums and message boards and none of them have helped so far.

The New Year is here! What technologies are you all wanting to see developed, improved, or continued? What was spetacular from 2008 for Linux?

If it is a LAMP server why do you have any window manager on it? I wouldn't even put X on it at all. SSH is the way to really admin a server. GDM wouldn't really do it either, check your load, logs, netstat's, tcpdumps, configs etc, after getting rid of X. Not only does running X open up a ton of security issues it chews up total server load. Try a 'ps auxwww |less' and see what kind of processes are running, im sure you could get rid of at least 60%

Hardy Heron turding my box out...
I have an older Dell Inspiron 1000; I've been running linux on it since Fedora 1, and have noticed that it's real slow lately, I think since upgrading to hardy.
My plan of attack is to install Xubuntu Hardy fresh (putting xfce on after doesn't seem to do it and I experimented on another box with good results)
What's your take? I'm running it as a development LAMP box, but I can't imagine apache and mysql bogging it down too hard when the only one looking at it is me.

GDM?

One of the reasons that I still run Ubuntu in VMware is that I cannot get away from Windows. I program in VB and C#. I do some Java but mostly through school and for fun.

Does anyone know of a way to move to Linux completely? I am happy that Ubuntu is so good. I just am not the kind of person that wants to recompile or look at poorly developed apps. I am so used to Office, IE and Visual Studio. Is there any real well put together acts out there? I really have nothing against Windows. I have used it since it crawled on top of DOS.

Check out Beryl if you want a desk top that will really amaze you. OSX or Vista cannot even come close to this. Ubuntu is probably the most popular distro out there right now. I have been using Linux for a long time because was a sys admin guy at Silicon Graphics in past times and I have always had a "thing" for UNIX. Can't beat the power and flexibility of Linux. I do mostly network stuff these days and there are some amazing tools for looking and dealing with network problems that are available for Linux.
