Overqualified Underutilized

Founded 8/23/2008
About
A think tank for networking to solve a common problem with those who are overqualified and are underutilized and want to get back to work. For folk who are considering working either in a field for which they are already experienced or a different field even if it is considered by the prospective employer to be beneath their intellectual capacity. For people who are realists and want to continue to be productive in society.

It's how you know what you know. You can study how to generally run a business, but can't you can also watch how people run their businesses and learn from that?

And like Barbara said, there's help out there. Off the top of my head, one is "The Strategy Game", a kind of make-your-own-adventure book. In it, you're a manager, and your decisions make or break the company's future. Don't know if it's still being published, but it's pretty good.

Isn't there something you truly enjoy doing, whether or not you get paid for it? That's where to start from, really.

Kate, don't sell yourself so short. Who ever said you need degrees to start a business. There's plenty of help available. I know plenty of people who've run great businesses with no college. YOu might ask someone who's suggested you start one to help you.

Well... I've had a couple of those all-in-one printer, copiers. $120 range stuff. Good for what I do, not so good for production stuff. Those little bitty cartiges cost money and run out too soon if you've got to print up 30 books with about 30 pages and a lot of graphics and words. ****SLURP**** and they're out!
Highly annoying. But for a one off thing, yeah, they're o.k.

Gina... I keep getting suggestions that I should go into business for myself.
But... I know my short comings when it comes to business sense. I'm a good back room troll, just doing my thing and making someone else look good.
Also, where I've got the most experience and credentials... heh heh... no freaking way could I go into business for myself! I don't have a bachelor's degree. Enough college credit to nearly have a doctorates, but I've only got an Associates of Applied Sciences. I'd need a few more pieces of paper than my Associates!

Ah well.
Who knows, I may need to be turning corners and getting my feet wet after all.
Who knows what the next few months will bring us.

Hmmm??? Sounds like you're more talented than you've been given - or taken - credit for. Go for the gold!

Once someone somehow mistakenly thought that I own a copier. Hint, no?

Gina, you're asking a great question - why not? With your talent and the holidays coming up, isn't there a way you can offer your services to others - including companies - and start a business of your own? I'm thinking cards and decorating store windows for starters.

Argh. I have a bachelor's degree in my "old" field. Why am I not self-employed??? - sorry, just venting.
