Keep Improving Yourself Professionally

Last year my University spent over $17,000 on books, tapes, and educational seminars. Why?

Because we have to keep current in our field. Since I'm also passionate about my field (back to sincerity), this isn't a burden but a joy.

If you're not interested in delivering the best seminar you possibly can, you probably don't need to be reading this book. Don't get me wrong. I'm not some Goody Two-Shoes who feels you should want to be and do your best work because it's the "right" thing to do (although it is). You should do your best because it's in your financial interest to do so. People will come back to other events you do and the word about how good you are will spread.

To do the best seminar possible, you need to educate yourself. In one of my niche markets I have a competitor who presents a lot of seminars. I sat in on one of their seminars a few years back. When I went back a few years later and sat in on a portion of the same seminar, I found that they hadn't changed a word. That is ridiculous.

If you need to spend money to learn as much as you can about your topic, do it. Read books. Read newsletters. Read trade publications. Attend seminars in your field. Attend seminars in related fields. Get on-line regularly and search for the key words in your field. Go as deeply into your topic as you can.

As a seminar leader, you need to study on another front as well. You also need to get as much education as you can in the areas of how to improve your seminar marketing and delivery.

You owe it to yourself, and you owe it to your audience.

Opportunity Chooses the Prepared!
Matthew 25 begins with the parable of the wise and unwise virgins. It's the story of 10 young ladies hoping to be chosen as brides. Five had lamps with oil in them, and five had lamps with oil and extra oil on the side. While they were waiting, rather than going to get extra oil for themselves, the five virgins with no extra oil slept along with the five who had extra oil. When the bridegroom (opportunity) came, the unprepared virgins wanted the prepared virgins to share their extra oil (help them get ready). Of course, the prepared virgins didn't want to miss their opportunity, so they refused to help the unprepared virgins. They were there, ready when the opportunity presented itself, so the opportunity (bridegroom) chose them to enter the celebration. It's as simple as that. Opportunity chooses the prepared!

Esteem elevation the highway to employability
Self esteem elevation is very critical factor leading to employment. It is a natural tendency to be low on self esteem during unemployment. Add to this are the discouraging remarks of the friends and relatives. .Even well meaning people with their pity &sympathy hit a severe blow on your self esteem. Even false praise will do no good. Come on!!! We are mature enough to distinguish between true & false and it hurts.
How to elevate your self esteem?
Remember, not so long ago, you were employed, considered competent, even had boss & colleagues singing your praise. You cannot become incompetent suddenly. Your low self esteem is dominating your mind set and thought process. It needs to be rekindled
How to elevate self esteem?
There are many things you are good at, May be they do not give you job or money, but they give you leadership status. You may be good at cooking, drawing, interiors, or any thing. Just before you structure your resume or before an important interview, do something you are good at, let people see and appreciate, you know it is genuine. You can even visit an orphanage and give pep talk to the less privileged. Management will also like it. This gives you a leadership status, now you are a giver not a seeker, being a giver always adds to the self esteem. When you attend the interview with high self esteem, you outperform beyond your own expectation.
No body can provide employment to anyone. One’s own talent at full bloom can do it, and that is possible only at elevated levels of self esteem. work on your self esteem. Go and conquer the world, and when you are employed, spread the good word, others will get motivated; this could well become the successful employment process.

Best of luck

Shyam

I am a bit sad and worried seeing my young jobless friends getting disheartened. I am also pleasantly surprised to see my friend Jo- An enthusiastically posting unending jobs. People failing to get calls or clearing interviews are certainly not less resourceful than the one getting it. It could possibly be a mismatch between opportunity & the attributes. The positioning most of the time goes wrong.
I suggest that the candidates should read the job posting carefully. Then they should analyze the opportunity and attributes factor carefully. They should highlight the related attributes and downplay the unrelated one. A ten second view of the resume should focus on the related attributes. Often I find that the ten seconds view gives only self glorification statements. The recruiter doesn’t get to see the qualities he is looking. I suggest that you should customise your resume for every job. It only takes a few minutes. You should also get your resume reviewed by a neutral friend. May be the members of this group can help.

A person in desperation and frustration has the naturally tendency for self glorification. Review by a neutral friend can be helpful.

Best of luck,

Shyam

Excellent posts here! Dr. Sharma makes wonderful points. He sounds like he's been involved in Toastmasters! It's a great idea to post your teaching points on speaking for the group. Dr. Sharma has also given a link to his website. If you'd like more information, I'm sure he's a great resource.
