WannaBee's W/O Experience

Founded 8/26/2008
About
I created this group for others like myself who went through the sometimes frustrating college courses to become an Accountant and upon graduation, found out that experience IS required. If you are in my situation or have been there, then this group is for you.

Hi everyone, new to the group so I thought I'd say hello and introduce myself. I have gotten my associates degree a few months ago and would love to become an actual Accountant somewhere but having no outside class experiences, it seems like I might as well have not gone to school at all. I know there are entry level positions out there somewhere otherwise, there wouldn't be experienced accountants out there. My question is, where are those entry level positions and how may I get one? It's nice to be a part of a group that knows just how I feel. Thanks for letting me join and Happy New Year! Maria

I just want to say hello to this group, I graduated in Aug of this year from University of West Florida with a dual maor in Accounting and Finance. I just been laid off after 3 years of part time work with a local automotive dealership. I was trying to work and go to school at the sametime. This economic downturn is affecting everyone, please feel free to look at my resume, it is a general one, I do try to adapt it to job announcements I see. Any advice of suggestions are openyl welcome.

Ok, lets update for the new members. We are all frustrated because we can't find work in our field since we don't have experience. Crazy. Well, I finally found a temporary position with UPS. No, I am not doing accounting, but I am working at least. Hopefully, that will get me through the end of the month and next month, tax season starts and maybe there will be something there. Anyone got any ideas for the job search? Please share your experience and expertise with us. It's ugly out there and getting uglier every day with more and more businesses closing.

Hi Julie, at least you found one. That means you have 1 year of experience. Hopefully, the employers out there will start looking at people with little or no experience. We can't require quite as much in wages as people with years of experience.

Thank you for adding me to the group. I have recieved my degree in 2007 in Business Accounting from Univeristy of Phoenix Online-Campus. I went to look for a job to start my career and found it very difficult to get a position. I luckily found one, but it isn't working out so well after a year there. I am now looking for a new position, but I am still finding it very difficult to find a position especially in this economy. I am looking forward to talking with you all and sharing experiences and frustrations.

Extreeeeeeeemely good point. I had never thought about the carryover of bad habits from previous employers as being a bad thing for experienced workers. Perhaps experienced workers have other liabilites as well that they bring to the table. Knowing of what they are might just help us get the job... presuming that we don't get haughty and zealous about it during interviews.

Hi everyone,
I just wanted to update and see how everyone was getting along. I am currently pestering a temp agency for a job that is only 3 months long and pays 10 an hour and is over 50 miles from my home. At least if they place me, I will have a few months of experience to note on my resume. We all have to start somewhere. I just wish that companies would understand that experience isn't always the key. When you get someone who is already experienced, you are also getting their bad habits and a previous employers training. That may not be best for your company, but who can make a business understand where we are coming from.

Thanks Rose! I feel I need to be in NM because we bought our home in ABQ. Right now it is wrong to sell and I am not sure about renting it. I have contacted several hiring/staffing agents and keep calling them until one (his/her employer) gives me a chance.
All: good luck to you and remember that you are not alone.......

No. I haven't had any luck here. :^(

Contrary to popular belief, engineering is a TERRIBLE field to get into. When it is said that "engineers are in demand", it is not mentioned that those engineers have to be experienced. There is practically no demand for engineers in the entry level. A sorting of available engineering-related job positions on Monster.com by experience requirements can confirm this.
