Creating HR policies and procedures
I've spent the past 20 years on active duty in the U.S. Navy, and had the opportunity to see and do things that I never would have imagined growing up in Santa Maria, CA.
My best attribute is a direct result of this -- I am able to take any situation and run with it! It's common in the military to be given extremely limited resources and be expected to do what might be considered unfeasible. Because of that, I can continually see opportunities to improve processes and maximize resources.
My favorite tasks (and accomplishments) during my military career involved overhauling processes that no longer worked -- the ones that were "always done that way". Through a little creative thinking I've been able to increase accuracy and productivity at every job assignment.
My ultimate goal has always been to free up workers' time to do more important tasks, which either allows the organization to do more with less -- or become more productive -- or both. I'm quite proud of the military awards I've received due to this: 3 Navy Commendation Medals and 10 Navy Achievement Medals.
Key to this is the job of a Navy Personnel Specialist. In this job, we have responsibility for all aspects of personnel support and records maintenance and payroll functions, including accession documentation, employment screening, training documentation, pay and benefits (including basic, special, and differential pay), deductions, garnishments, and allotments from pay, multi-state withholding, travel claim processing and accounting, foreign currency, ATMs, and fiscal reporting. In short, our job function is one-stop shopping for all HR functions.
