About Me

A trustworthy ally to the citizens of San Mateo County, Sheriff Greg Munks has performed his job admirably since elected to the position in summer 2006. Prior to being elected, Greg Munks held the position of Undersheriff of San Mateo County for 13 years and was instrumental in developing a number of important projects that have made San Mateo County a safer and more prosperous place to live. From his work in improving anti-gang violence initiatives to his leadership of numerous important community service organizations, Sheriff Greg Munks has consistently demonstrated the kind of skilled leadership and multifaceted law enforcement experience one would expect from a 30-year veteran. Showing his considerable potential for success early in his career, Greg Munks got his start in law enforcement as a San Mateo County Deputy Sheriff. After serving San Mateo County for four years, Greg Munks transferred his skills to the Palo Alto Police Department, where he would remain for 12 years, eventually earning the rank of Lieutenant and heading the department’s human resources division. Greg Munks returned to San Mateo County in 1993, assuming the role of Undersheriff before being elected Sheriff. A fixture of the law enforcement community, Sheriff Greg Munks is involved in a number of leading professional organizations dedicated to fighting crime. Currently Sheriff Munks maintains membership in the following organizations: the California State Sheriffs’ Association, the California Peace Officers’ Association, the Western States Sheriffs’ Association, the California Narcotics Officers’ Association, and the International Association of Chiefs of Police. Additionally, Sheriff Greg Munks currently serves as the Chairperson of the Northern California High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area (HIDTA) program. In his personal life, Greg Munks is a husband and father of four children: two boys and two girls. A graduate of Golden Gate University, Greg Munks earned his MBA in 1995. Previously, Greg Munks earned his Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from the Menlo College in Atherton, California.
