Group Deputy Managing Director at Access Bank PLC in Lagos, Nigeria, and an alumnus of Harvard Business School, Herbert Wigwe brings a long and successful track record to his profession. After completing his coursework in “A” Levels, Herbert Wigwe entered the University of Nigeria Nsukka, where he studied finance and accounting. In June 1987, Herbert Wigwe earned his B.Sc. in Accountancy from the University of Nigeria, with the additional distinction of 2nd Class Upper Division.
Recognizing his superior academic performance, Coopers and Lybrand Associates Limited accepted Herbert Wigwe as a Graduate Assistant from September 1987 to July 1988. Working within the Management Consultants division in Lagos, Herbert Wigwe fulfilled numerous duties over the course of his assistantship, including the design, assessment, and implementation of improved accounting systems. In addition, Herbert Wigwe prepared various feasibility studies for the multinational accounting organization.
After only a year on the job, and following his outstanding performance, Herbert was promoted in July 1988. For the next year, Herbert Wigwe learned the finer points of accounting, gaining essential training in the auditing of financial and manufacturing institutions. The lessons from Coopers and Lybrand paid off for Herbert Wigwe, as he passed his professional examinations from the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria and became an Associate Chartered Accountant (ACA).
After serving one year as a Credit Analyst for Kapital Merchant Bank in Lagos, Herbert Wigwe moved to the U.K. to pursue graduate studies at the University College of North Wales (now Bangor University). A recipient of the British Council Scholarship, Herbert Wigwe functioned as a standout student at the University College of North Wales and ultimately gained his M.A. in Banking and Finance in September 1991. Upon graduation, Herbert Wigwe returned to Lagos, where he joined Guaranty Trust Bank PLC. Herbert Wigwe held a variety of positions with Guaranty Trust Bank PLC until 2002, when he received an executive position at Access Bank PLC, where he remains to this day.
