A widely respected expert in health care management, Dr. Sean Tunis brings years of experience in public policy and medical research to his current role as the Director of the Center for Medical Technology Policy (CMTP). Founded by Dr. Sean Tunis in 2006, CMTP is a private, non-profit organization dedicated to advancing medical technology by improving the quality and objectivity of medical research. In his leadership role, Dr. Sean Tunis consults with health care experts from around the world on issues of comparative effectiveness, evidence-based medicine, clinical research, and technology policy to shape CMTP’s overall strategic direction. Prior to founding CMTP, Dr. Sean Tunis served as the Chief Medical Officer and Director of the Office of Clinical Standards and Quality for Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) in Washington, D.C. In his dual role, Dr. Sean Tunis worked to define and measure the effectiveness and quality of clinical policies for the United States Medicare and Medicaid programs and implement new policy initiatives based on his research as a senior advisor to the CMS Administrator. During his tenure with CMS, Dr. Sean Tunis also co-chaired the CMS Council on Technology and Innovation. Dr. Sean Tunis originally joined CMS as the Director of the Coverage and Analysis Group. Dr. Sean Tunis earned his medical degree from Stanford University School of Medicine. Upon graduation, Dr. Tunis completed his residency training in internal medicine and emergency medicine at UCLA and the University of Maryland. In addition to his formal medical training, Dr. Sean Tunis holds a Master’s degree in Health Services Research from Stanford University School of Medicine and a Bachelor’s degree in Biology and History of Science from Cornell University. Dr. Sean Tunis is professionally affiliated with the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) as an AAAS Science & Technology Policy Fellow.
